Original Civil War Confederate soldier's letter. 3 pages written in period ink.

Flint Hill
August 30th 1861

My Dear Father,

Yours of the 26th was handed me yesterday evening as soon as I returned from picket. I also found the box, everything was in it. The boots and hat both fit me very well. I am very much obliged to you for the box. At least the contents of it. I expect a letter from Jos. Lyon by every mail. Captain Whitehead’s company went out scouting with General Jones last Tuesday. We went over to the Great Falls. We could see a few Yankees and could hear the water roaring over the falls just as plain as if I was standing on the edge of the bank. I was about 250 yards from the water. Some of our forces are about four miles this side of Alexandria (Munson’s) Hill, which is about 15 miles below here. They have from 3 to 4 skirmishes down there every day. There has been very few shot yet.

Uncle Dick is not very well. Is suffering with rheumatism in one of his shoulders. He sends his best respects to you and all of your family and his love to all of his family and howdy to all of your servants.

Give my love to Mother and all of your family and best respect to all of my friends.

Write soon to your affectionate son,

Hope W. M.

P.S. Direct your letter to Manassas.

Hope W. Massie

P.S. I sent you a small piece of the wire in this letter. As I cannot get an opportunity of sending the box.

Hope W. Massie
