Dear Parents,
I arrived here all safe and sound yesterday afternoon after a pleasant voyage of three days. I met lieutenant Gibbs at Baltimore so you see I had company part of the way. The weather is very warm here. Our regiment is all packed up and are under orders to march. In fact, the whole army is a going to fall back in Washington. We had to go up the James River in company with a gunboat.
Dave Weaver is 2
nd sergeant and I am 3
rd but there is vacancy for orderly but whether I will get it I cannot tell, but hope it will come out all right. Weaver was appointed in place of Sergeant McCormic [who was] promoted to sergeant major. I think it will turn out all right. The boys are getting up a petition to the colonel to have me made orderly.
I can’t think of any more to write at present. I will write more the next time. Johnny Graves is well and sends his respects. Excuse the writing as I have a bad pen. Goodbye for the present.
My Love to all,
Anthony G. Graves Jr.
