5th New York Infantry - Twice Wounded

Item DOC-5171
December 1862 Thomas W. Cartwright Jr
Price: $450.00

Description

Four war dated telegrams sent via the American Telegraph Company. All were written from the Ebbitt House in Washington, DC. Three telegrams deal with Captain Thomas Cartwright's journey to Fredericksburg to look for the body of his father, (1st Lieutenant Thomas Cartwright - 63rd New York Infantry - Irish Brigade). Cartwright believed his father was killed during the action at Fredericksburg. It turns out his father was not injured during the battle. The fourth telegram was sent by A. H. Craney to Mrs. Cartwright informing her that her son (Thomas Cartwright - 5th New York Infantry) was very sick and advising her to come soon.

Thomas (5th NY) was wounded twice (Big Bethel, VA and Gaines' Mill, VA). On December 26, 1862, he died at Ebbitt's House from his wounds.
