Dear Constantine,

I received your kind and interesting letter day before yesterday. Which was gladly received and I was truly glad to hear from you and to hear that you was well and enjoying good and happy Christmas. Oh, how I do wish that I could be there to go with you to church and Sunday School.

You requested a long letter. I will grant as much as possible. You ask how I felt as a prisoner. My life is not happy here. But I had rather be here than in the Rebel army. And I think they are to release me. For I did not come over here to stay in prison. I came because I was a Union man.

And you asked me if I had any books. I have no books but a testament. If not too costly, I would like to have some books to read, a pair of stockings and a pound or two of butter in a little box.

I hope this may find you well. I am still improving. I would like to know the address of Ephraim Mock, as he is in the army.

Yours truly, etc.,

E. G. Mock
