It gives me great pleasure, my dear Miss Virginia, to know that you have not forgotten me. When your letter was handed me yesterday, I was expecting to leave with the two hundred officers. It was then said would be sent to be offered for exchange. But today the number having been reduced to fifty, I find myself left out. So, I am a Prisoner certainly for some time to come. I cannot but express now what I felt and intended to say while thinking I would so soon leave. That you cannot imagine how grateful I am to you for your kindness and your many nice letters to me, which have so much added to my pleasure and enjoyment while a prisoner. And though I wish so much to be exchanged, if it be attended with our entire cessation of our correspondence, I shall have many sincere regrets.
I suppose this evening you are probably out for a ride. May it prove most pleasant and if you bestow a thought upon your friend, imagine how delighted he would be to be at your side. I am looking anxiously for Miss Sallie's letter and carte.
Colonel Davis is here and not of the number to be sent for exchange. Please thank your cousin for her most acceptable message and tell her I was not "shocked" but quite electrified. And regret exceedingly you did not give her name. But hope you will yet do so.
My kind regards to your sister and cousin.
Your Friend,
R.B. Boston
