Dear Sir,
The letter of the 13
th instant has just reached me. In reply, I beg to say that I regret to hear of the death of Corporal W. W. Chappell of my company. And I take pleasure in giving you the information you desire relative to his horse, etc..
Corporal Chappell was sent to the hospital on the 25
th ult., taking with him all the property he had in camp except his horse. The bridle and saddle he used belonged to the government. His horse is now with my command and is worth about $500. He has pay due him by the government from the 31
st of December 1862 to the 30
th of April 1863. This pay I will collect and hold subject to your order. His pay for the months of January and February, I have already collected and will hold until further advised by you. His pay for the four months will amount to $103.00.
