Wounded at Culpeper, VA
Commanded the 2nd Battalion, 1st Vermont Cavalry at the Battle of Hanover during the Gettysburg Campaign.
Awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions at Gettysburg. Award citation: "Led the second battalion of his regiment in a daring charge." This charged was against Confederate forces attempting to take Big Round Top.
