Richmond was the capital of the Confederacy during the Civil War, and afterward it rebuilt rapidly. Many photographs were made of the city both during and after the war to document its destruction and recovery.

The Lee Gallery (Lyons & Brother) was a known photographic studio in Richmond during the mid-to-late 19th century. They produced portraits, city views, and souvenir images.
