Colonel Whistler
Commanding Brigade
Fort Corcoran
Colonel,
Your regiment suffered much yesterday. I was ordered by General Barlow to take a Rebel work. Your men behaved well. We had a heavy loss in Captain Hooker, He was shot through the head. Lieutenant Zoller was wounded, I fear mortally in the groin. Lieutenant Martin my acting adjutant, Captain Tillinghast and Lieutenant Wheelhouse wounded. 12 men killed and 20 wounded, 40 missing. The army has thus far been unsuccessful.
I am tired and worn out having made an assault and held an advanced skirmish line by engaging from 7 A.M. and was only relieved this morning.
Truly Yours
George Hogg
Major
Commanding 2nd New York Artillery
Lieutenant Colonel Wilson has never been with the regiment in any of the two engagements at Deep Bottom.
