Fannie Virginia Cassiopeia Lawrence was one of the most photographed of the "slave children" who were used as propaganda tools by abolitionists during the Civil War. Caption on the Carte de' Viste (CDV) photographs states, "Fannie Virginia Casseopia Lawrence: A reddemed Slave Child, 5 years of age. Redeemed in Virginia by Catherine S. Lawrence, baptized at Plymouth Church, by Henry Ward Beecher, May 1863." CDV presents backmark of Kellogg Bros., Hartford, Connecticut.
